Women's Empowerment in Agriculture Index Analysis

Structured analysis and interpretation of empowerment data for agriculture evidence use.

Project overview

What this project was built to help with

WEAI had been used in many places since 2012, but the documented use cases were difficult to find and compare. A custom LLM analyzed how the index had been applied across agriculture programming, gender equality work, and women's empowerment policy, supporting an article and online dashboard for IFPRI and USAID.

Project story

Understanding how WEAI evidence has actually been used

REFS and IFPRI needed to understand documented uses of the Women's Empowerment in Agriculture Index since its introduction in 2012. The relevant evidence was distributed across many records, making it hard to see how WEAI had informed agriculture programming, gender equality work, and women's empowerment policy.

A custom LLM analyzed WEAI use cases and surfaced thousands of previously difficult-to-find examples. The results supported an article and online dashboard, helping IFPRI and USAID make more informed decisions about how to use WEAI evidence to promote gender equality and women's empowerment in agriculture.

Decision problem

REFS and IFPRI needed to understand how the Women's Empowerment in Agriculture Index had been used since its introduction in 2012. The evidence was spread across documented use cases, publications, and program materials, making it difficult to see patterns in how WEAI informed gender equality and agriculture decisions.

What the work involved

1

Built a custom LLM to analyze documented uses of the Women's Empowerment in Agriculture Index since 2012.

2

Surfaced thousands of previously difficult-to-find use cases so IFPRI and USAID could better understand how WEAI evidence had been applied.

3

Supported an article and online dashboard, helping teams make more informed decisions about using WEAI to promote gender equality and women's empowerment in agriculture.

Outcome

Clearer interpretation of empowerment evidence for agriculture and impact decisions.
